If you didn’t catch our recent BESS webinar, here are some basics about BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems)!

Energy storage strengthens grid reliability and resilience.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) help ensure reliable electricity by storing energy when supply is abundant and releasing it when demand rises or generation falls. They can help balance variations in solar and wind generation, reduce strain during peak demand, and provide critical support during grid disruptions. As Indiana’s electricity demand grows, Energy Storage can help utilities meet that demand without relying exclusively on building new power plants and transmission infrastructure.

Potential safety concerns deserve safeguards.

Local governments can mitigate the risk of fire and other hazards through safety plans developed in coordination with fire departments, clear emergency access, appropriate setbacks, and training for first responders. Modern battery storage projects can be designed and operated with safety as a priority, but those protections must be built into the project from the start.

Strong standards and responsible development allow communities to benefit.

The choice is not between grid resilience and public safety. Indiana can pursue both by establishing clear, consistent standards for Energy Storage permitting, construction, operation, and decommissioning. Requirements should reflect current fire codes, applicable National Fire Protection Association standards, manufacturer guidance, and local emergency response capabilities. With thoughtful planning and enforceable safeguards, Energy Storage can improve grid reliability, support renewable energy, and help manage electricity costs while protecting the health and safety of surrounding communities
