Imagine an Indiana where everyone has abundant access to clean water, natural lands, pure air, and affordable clean energy.

This vision for Indiana isn’t HEC’s alone – it’s shared by the hundreds of Hoosiers who invested their time, energy, and imaginative powers into helping HEC develop this first-in-a-generation strategic plan. Their participation is a potent reminder of the reason this organization is identified as “Hoosier Environmental Council.” A “council,” after all, is a group of people who come together to debate and decide on strategies to achieve a common purpose.

That’s also why the strategic plan outlined below is shaped by a commitment to collaboration, communication, and connection as the tools for creating the change necessary for Indiana to become the place we’ve envisioned – one where all Hoosiers have abundant access to clean water, natural lands, pure air, and affordable clean energy.

There are plenty of challenges ahead, but, thanks to the input of supporters like you, the vision and scope of our new strategic plan matches the scale of those challenges. Hoosiers from all 92 Indiana counties have made financial contributions to HEC. We know our membership is strong and diverse! With your help, HEC will redouble its work to minimize the impacts of climate change, improve environmental health, raise community voices through the work of environmental justice, and support the development of thriving and sustainable communities across Indiana. The choice between environmental progress and economic growth is a false one. Our plan will leverage best practices and proven solutions to move Indiana toward fulfilling this vision.

Your feedback and questions on this plan are always welcome. As the American anthropologist and scholar Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
