The Hoosier Environmental Council, along with many other community voices, called for a public hearing on a permit that would allow Amazon to impact wetlands and streams in the Kankakee River watershed to build a massive data center on 350 acres of land in New Carlisle, Indiana.
The data center would destroy about 10 acres of wetlands and several feet of stream. The mitigation proposal? Purchasing credits from the state wetland mitigation program, which is failing to replace wetlands needed to protect Hoosiers from poor water quality.
More than 100 people gathered on Wednesday, April 30th, to speak out about the public hearing, including HEC’s Water Policy Director Maria Jose Iturbide-Chang. HEC, along with many others, echoed similar sentiments: the wetland should be protected, and the proposed mitigation is insufficient.
