Update: this podcast is now live. Listen.
If you’re out on the West Fork White River in mid-July, you may spot them. They’ll be the jovial group casting a fly with feet in the water or from the deck of Jason DeArman’s drift boat. The So Fly Crew got their podcast start featuring the waters of their native Ontario, hoping to share their love for the sport with others. In 2018, they connected with a fan several hundred miles south in Indiana.
Jason DeArman, a realtor by trade, has been fishing the White River for fifteen years or so. And he’s been telling anyone who will listen that it is an undiscovered gem for fly fishing enthusiasts. He’s not a casual sportsman. Jason has poured his passion for fly fishing into developing a river guide service based on the White River. Not only is he an advocate for the sport, he is also a booster of the White River – though he’ll go anywhere they are biting. He’s a fly fisherman who listened to fly fishing podcasts in his spare time.
That’s how DeArman found the So Fly Crew. As he saw their podcast evolve, adding video and taking trips slightly further afield, the thought occurred to him, “Why not invite them to see our underappreciated slice of the fly fishing world here in Indiana?” He did. And the guys said, “We’re there!” In between that invite and now, Jason has organized sponsors to help fund essentials including food and lodging detail, mapped out an itinerary, and provided the guys with some background on the river.
That’s one thing that’s impressed the So Fly Crew before they’ve even set foot on Indiana soil – the enthusiasm and advocacy behind the White River. “We’re really impressed by the amount of support in the White River watershed community and to be honest, a little bit jealous,” said So Fly crewmember Aldo Pescatore-Tardioli. DeArman is going to make sure they have a great time on the White River. “It’s just about getting people on the river. They’ll see.” We agree and support Jason in his efforts to showcase the West Fork White River! (8/15, Now posted. LISTEN)
