Local Stems Farm is one of Hoosier Environmental Council’s newest Green Businesses, recognized for its commitment to sustainable practices, pesticide-free growing, and creating spaces where people and pollinators can thrive together. The following is an introduction to the farm, from owner LeAnne Lentz.

Now preparing for its third growing season, Local Stems Farm is a small but mighty flower farm located in Boggstown, Indiana. Our farm specializes in locally grown cut flowers produced without pesticides, prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and seasonal growing. While many of the flowers grown for bouquets are not native to the region, they are non-invasive and provide important nectar sources for pollinators throughout the growing season.

A defining feature of Local Stems Farm is our intentional integration of native plantings. Pollinator strips of native perennials line garden beds, attracting beneficial insects and supporting species like Monarch butterflies. Each year, additional native trees, shrubs, and flowers are added along fence rows and surrounding areas, strengthening habitat and ecological resilience. We continue expanding our open season as well, with early spring bulbs and hardy blooms like daffodils, allium, peonies, and thousands of tulips planted for future harvests.

Across the road from the flower fields sits a five-acre native prairie, transformed from a former grass field into a vibrant landscape with walking trails, benches, native trees, and educational signage. Our prairie is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk and offers visitors a chance to experience native ecosystems up close while learning about prairie plants, butterflies, and wildlife. I hope when warmer weather arrives, you’ll come check it out!

Local Stems Farm sells fresh-cut flowers at the Shelbyville Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Westfield Farmers Market on Thursdays, and also supplies several local flower shops. Because the flowers are harvested just days—or even hours—before sale, they are noticeably fresher and longer-lasting than store-bought alternatives. We also host popular “You Pick” events, where guests can build their own bouquets, enjoy live music, local food vendors, and explore the prairie trails during special events.
