The Hoosier Environmental Council is Looking for its Next Executive Director
HEC has played a leading role shaping Indiana’s environmental policy for nearly four decades. For the last 14 years, Jesse Kharbanda has served as HEC’s Executive Director, during which he led the organization to accomplish gains in environmental health, land and water protection, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, public transportation, and environmental justice, as well as a significant broadening of the environmental tent in Indiana. On October 7, Jesse announced that he is leaving HEC to shift his career in a new direction.
The HEC Board of Directors has started the search for a talented, experienced, and passionate individual to serve as our next Executive Director and pilot the organization into its fifth decade.
Thanks to Jesse, a strong Board of Directors, and a sixteen-member dedicated, professional Staff with extensive experience in legislative & regulatory advocacy, community organizing, environmental law, technical assistance, policy analysis, and mission-centered development, the next Executive Director will step in and lead an effective, well-managed, and successful environmental nonprofit that is well-positioned to continue tackling Indiana’s most pressing environmental challenges.
HEC’s work will continue unabated during the transition to the next ED. Our strategic environmental policy initiatives—in environmental health, climate action, water quality protection, safe and healthy food systems, environmental justice, transportation and land use, wilderness and wildlife protection, sustainable energy, and legal advocacy—take us to all four corners of the state and all levels of public policy-making. A quick review of our website pages on “The Issues” that HEC focuses on reveals the breadth of our work to make Indiana a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable place to live, work and raise a family.
HEC’s members, Board, Staff, and allies will be sad to bid farewell to Jesse but look forward to welcoming our next Executive Director, who will build on HEC’s compelling vision for Indiana as the 21st century unfolds.
