Sept. 29, 2007 – LEAF files Public Comments on U.S. Steel NPDES permit

On behalf of the 165-member ad-hoc citizen group, People Opposed to Wastewater Without Enough Review (POWWER), LEAF submitted public comments to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) challenging U.S. Steel’s draft wastewater pollution permit. If approved, the permit would have allowed the steel mill to increase the amount of chromium it could dump into a tributary of Lake Michigan and would allow the mill five more years to comply with pollution limits for several toxins, including mercury, cyanide, ammonia, zinc, copper and benzo(a)pyrene.
