Clean Air Act Threatened Again – Keep Up Your Emails to Lugar and Bayh
Several months ago, the Hoosier Environmental Council asked for your help in protecting the authority of the U.S. EPA to administer the Clean Air Act and regulate greenhouse gas emissions as a harmful pollutant. We won that fight; the Murkowski Amendment was defeated, and EPA authority was protected.
Now, another threat to EPA authority has arisen. Senator Rockefeller is proposing a two-year ban on regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. This proposal might be appearing in the U.S. Senate before elections, so time is short to protect the Clean Air Act!
The quest by some in Congress to derail efforts at dealing with the enormous challenge of global climate change hurts the overall worldwide effort to find a solution to this problem, and also puts America at a competitive disadvantage in being a global leader in developing low-carbon technologies. Right now, China has already surpassed the U.S. in renewable component manufacturing – they are now the world’s second largest producer of solar panels. And China has passed its own Renewable Electricity Standard, and is on target to meet this goal. If the U.S. continues to procrastinate while the rest of the world embraces low-carbon energy technologies, America will be further left behind. We cannot afford to stop moving forward with renewable electricity and emission reduction goals, not even for one more year!
Tell Senators Bayh and Lugar that you want the U.S. to stop waiting and start taking action on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Urge them to oppose the Rockefeller Amendment, and any other “dirty air act” which might try to stop the U.S. from moving forward in the global clean energy marketplace and dealing with the serious threat of global climate change!
