Understanding the Issues
Bringing High Speed Rail to Indiana
The buzz and the demand are growing. Take a look at what’s been happening on the push for high speed rail in Indiana.
Rethinking I-69
In 2004, the Indiana Department of Transportation received approval to build the I-69 extension from Indianapolis to Evansville along the New-Terrain route. Learn more about the history, environmental impact, recent developments and what you can do to stop this route.
Improved Transit
Indeed, Indiana is stuck firmly in the past when it comes to transportation issues. And as our nation’s economic crisis continues, it seems even less likely that our government will change its ways and embrace innovative solutions to transportation challenges.
Still, not all hope is lost. Over the past several years, Indianapolis has seen a groundswell of support among citizens for an eco-friendly and economically smart public transit system. Now, it’s time for that desire for change to be translated into action. It’s time for light rail, commuter trains, and a better bus system in the state capital.
Many cities, some smaller than Indianapolis, are already operating light rail transit systems. These quiet, energy-efficient public trains are in place, or are being built, in places like Austin, San Diego, Denver and Portland. Why not us?
Such a system would greatly reduce energy consumption, and provide an affordable and convenient mode of travel for residents. And contrary to traditional trains, they’re extraordinarily quiet.
Improved public transit including light rail isn’t a silver bullet. But it is an important step in the right direction. If we truly want energy independence, and if we’re serious about environmental issues, then we must recognize a golden opportunity when we see it. An expanded public transit system with light rail in Indianapolis is just that: an opportunity. Let’s make sure we seize it.
